Privacy policy
Last updated 25 October 2026.
Crime Rates Map has no accounts. Some pages outside the UK show Google ads; where the law requires it, Google asks for your consent first. We count visitors in a way that stores nothing about you, and Google Analytics sets cookies only if you agree. We do not sell data about you. What the site itself remembers stays in your own browser.
Who is responsible
Crime Rates Map is run by RAFAEL CARDOSO LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17323841), registered office 17 Nethercroft Lane, Danesmoor, Chesterfield, S45 9DE, England. We are the controller of the little personal data described below. Contact: dev@rafaelcardoso.co.uk.
What reaches our server, and what we do with it
- The places you look up. When you search, tap the map, set a radius or compare places, your browser sends what is needed to answer: the search text, a postcode or district, map coordinates and the radius. We use it to send back the answer and do not store it.
- Address search. When you search for a street address that is not in our own place and postcode lists, your browser sends the typed text to Photon, a free address search run by komoot (komoot.com) on OpenStreetMap data. It does not pass through us and we do not see or keep it.
- Page visits. We do not keep logs of the pages you visit. To count visitors, each page view sends one request whose IP address and browser name are turned into a one-way code with a random key that changes every day; the key is held only in the server's memory and never saved, so the saved codes cannot be traced back to an IP address. We keep that day's codes and the running total, and delete the codes and the key the next day. Nothing is stored and nothing is put on your device. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, you are not counted at all.
- Your location, only if you ask. "Use my location" asks your browser for permission first. If you allow it, your coordinates are sent like a tapped point on the map, and are not stored.
- Ratings, only if you send one. "Rate us" sends your stars, your note if you write one, and the page you were on to us by email through Postmark. Nothing else about you is attached and nothing is stored on the site. Your IP address is used only in memory to limit how many ratings one address can send; it is never written down.
We use this only to give you the answer you ask for, which is our legitimate interest in running the site. Your location is used only if you give permission. Counting visitors is also our legitimate interest: knowing how many people use the site, with the codes kept for one day at most. You can object at any time by turning on Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track in your browser, or by writing to us.
Advertising
Pages about countries, regions, towns and neighbourhoods outside the UK may show ads from Google AdSense. The map and the UK pages show no Google ads. The map has one ad space that we sell directly to an advertiser we have checked: it is a plain link, with no script, tracking pixel or cookie, and nothing about you is shared with the advertiser. Google's ad and consent script loads on every page of the site, because that is how its consent message works, but ads appear only on those pages. In the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, Google's consent message asks first: without your consent Google shows only ads that use no personal profile, and still uses cookies to limit how often an ad repeats and to fight fraud. With your consent Google may personalise ads using cookies and similar technology. You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie choices link at the bottom of every page. How Google uses data from sites that use its services.
Google Analytics
In the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, a message asks the first time you visit whether we may use Google Analytics (Google's consent message once the site shows ads, our own banner before that). Until you agree, no analytics cookie is set: the Google Analytics script runs in Google's Consent Mode and sends only cookieless signals (the page viewed, your browser and the fact that you have not agreed, with no identifier that recognises you on a later page or visit), which Google uses to estimate how many people visit. With a Global Privacy Control signal the script is not loaded at all. Once the site uses Google's consent message, visitors outside the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are not asked: Google Analytics runs for them unless their browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal. If you decline, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, it stays that way.
If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by our property code, kept for up to 2 years) and sends Google the pages you view, how you got here (for example a search engine), your device, browser, screen size and approximate location, and your IP address, which Google uses to estimate your location and does not store. Google acts as our processor and may handle the data in the United States under its data transfer safeguards. We use the reports to see which pages are useful; we do not use Google Analytics for advertising. In the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland our legal basis is your consent; elsewhere it is our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful, and you can still say no.
You can change your mind at any time; withdrawing stops Google Analytics and deletes its cookies on this site.
Google's privacy policy explains what Google does with this data.
Live cameras
The camera dots on the world map open a picture from a public camera. Your browser loads that picture from the camera operators' own servers (or from ours, for operators that need a key or block direct loading), so the operator sees your IP address and the camera you opened. For a YouTube stream, the preview image comes from YouTube (i.ytimg.com); the player itself loads only after you press Play, from youtube-nocookie.com, Google's privacy-enhanced mode, and from then on Google handles the video under Google's privacy policy. Some cameras also offer a live video or a short clip: it streams from the camera operator's server, and only once you press Play. We store nothing about which cameras you open.
If you request an API key
This applies only if you ask for a key to the API. Visitors to the site are not affected.
- What we store. The name, email address and purpose you give on the form; once a key is issued, a one-way hash of it (never the key itself); and how many requests the key makes each day. Your IP address is used only in memory to limit how often one address can send a request; it is never written down.
- Why. To decide on your request and to run your key. Our legal basis is taking steps at your request.
- Email. Postmark sends the emails about your request and key on our behalf.
- How long. A key request is deleted 30 days after we answer it, or after 90 days if nobody has answered it. When a key is revoked, its name, email and purpose are deleted 12 months later. Only the current day's usage counts are kept, and they are replaced each day.
What is kept in your browser
Crime Rates Map uses your browser's own storage (not cookies) for things you choose to keep. It stays on your device, we cannot see it, and you can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings:
- Your compare picks: up to three places.
- Your cookie choices: kept by Google's consent message (or our banner) so it does not ask again.
Other services your browser talks to
- Cloudflare carries all traffic to Crime Rates Map and protects it from attacks, so it sees your IP address and the pages requested. It may set a cookie that is strictly necessary for that protection. Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- OpenFreeMap serves the map. Your browser downloads map tiles from it directly, so it sees your IP address and the area you are viewing. openfreemap.org.
- Google Analytics: cookieless signals until you accept, cookies only if you accept, as described above.
- Google AdSense, as described under Advertising: its script and consent message on every page, ads only on place pages outside the UK.
Crime Rates Map's own servers are in Germany, in the European Union.
Your rights
You have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how we use it. We keep nothing linked to you ourselves, so there is usually nothing to give or delete. Withdrawing your Google Analytics consent above stops any further collection; to have what was already collected deleted, or for anything else, write to dev@rafaelcardoso.co.uk and we will answer within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk.
Changes
If Crime Rates Map ever adds accounts, or anything else that keeps data about you or uses it in a new way, this policy will be updated before that feature goes live, and the date at the top will change.
